Ambassador's Biography



H.E.Mr. Nguyen Tam Chien, Ambassador Extraodinary and Plenipotentiary of the SR Vietnam to the United States



H.E.Mr. Nguyen Tam Chien was born in Nghe An Province, central Vietnam, on January 20, 1948.

August 2001: Ambassador Extraodinary and Plenipotentiary of Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the United States of America.

August 2000: Granted title Ambassador of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

August 1997, he was promoted to Vice Minister of Foreign affairs, exclusively in charge of economic affairs and multilateral affairs dealing with international and regional organizations such as the United Nations, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).

1996 to 1997, he served as Assistant Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1992 to 1996 he was Ambassador Extraodinary and Plenipotential of Vietnam to Japan.

1984 to 1992, Mr. Chien worked at the Policy Planning Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he was promoted to Deputy Director General in 1988 and then Director General in 1990.

1980 to 1982: Worked as a Desk officer at the Soviet Union Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1975 to 1980: Attache at the Vietnam Embassy in Moscow.

1973 to 1975: Workded as a Desk officer at the Soviet Union Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

1972 to 1973: Worked at the Vietnamese Embassy in Moscow.

1972: Joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Education: in 1972, he graduated from the Engineering University in the former Soviet Union as an electrical/mechanical engineer.

1982 to 1984: Attended the Moscow Diplomacy Academy, where he earned his Master's Degree in International Relations.

Foreign languages: Russian and English.

Marital status: Married with two sons and one daughter.

Ambassador Chien is committed to contribute to the opening of a truly new chapter in Vietnam-US relations, focusing on promoting economic, trade and other areas of cooperation between the two countries, on the basis of friendship, confidence building, equality and mutual benefits.
